An unusual car theft occurred last Friday at W.A. Wright Elementary School where Mt. Juliet police say a 10-year-old child took a vehicle and drove home.
A woman called 911 from the school’s parking lot around 1 p.m. on Nov. 14 reporting her car and child were missing. She had reportedly gone into the school to drop off paperwork, leaving the vehicle running and the child inside.
One witness stated the vehicle recklessly backed out of the parking spot, narrowly avoiding colliding with another car, then jumped a curb and sped off toward Lebanon Road.
MJPD and Wilson County Sheriff’s School Resource Officers responded believing the situation to be a kidnapping; however, when they reviewed the surveillance footage, it showed no one else entered the vehicle between the woman stepping out and the car driving away.
Authorities had to consider the possibility of the child driving the car away.
Officers located the vehicle at the family’s residence located approximately one mile away from W.A. Wright Elementary. The garage was open and the car was inside. That also noticed that a refrigerator had been bumped during parking.
The child was found safe and accompanied by his father. According to police, the father was confused that the child arrived home without the mother. It was then the 10-year-old child confessed he drove the car home after a disagreement with his mother.
Wilson County SROs are leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and the child’s welfare.
“Our team responded swiftly and effectively, working closely with Wilson County Schools and Wilson County Sheriff SROs to review video and gather facts as quickly as possible. I’m incredibly thankful that the child was found safe and unharmed,†MJPD Chief Tyler Chandler said. “This incident is a clear example of the strong partnership we have with Wilson County Schools and SROs. That close collaboration ensures any incident at one of our area schools receives a rapid, coordinated response that prioritizes the safety and well-being of every child.â€
During the investigation at the home, officers discovered the father reportedly had an outstanding warrant for theft of property with wire fraud of Nashville and took him into custody.
