The Macon County Tigers capped off an impressive season with a third-place finish at the TSSAA Class A State Golf Tournament in Sevierville earlier this month.
The Tigers finished with a team total of plus-57, just nine strokes behind runner-up Dyer County and 31 strokes back from the state champion, Signal Mountain, who claimed the title at plus-26.
The Tigers showed resilience and improvement throughout the two-day tournament. After sitting in fourth place following the first round, Macon County battled back on Day 2 to move up into third, solidifying its place among the top golf programs in Tennessee.
Macon County’s second-round scores reflected the team’s steady play and composure under championship pressure:
• Hampton Parker — 82
Final Team Standings1 Signal Mountain — +26
Coach Beverly Shoulders praised her team for their hard work and determination throughout the season, noting how the group came together as the year progressed.
“First of all, I just want to congratulate the guys for a great season,†Shoulders said. “Maybe unexpected by many because we’ve been to the state tournament the last several years either as a team or individually. But this team came together and we got better every match and every week. They just really stepped up.â€
Shoulders highlighted the team’s strong finish and leadership from senior McKade Mix, who helped guide the Tigers through the postseason.
“We finished that first day in fourth place amongst eight teams, and we came back that second day and finished third,†she continued. “We were wanting to beat Dyer County for that second-place spot, but unfortunately we weren’t able to make that happen. I can’t say enough about the guys that played. McKade Mix, our only senior, really stepped up and led this bunch into the postseason. I’m just so proud of them.â€
With several underclassmen returning and “a lot of young talent coming up,†Shoulders expressed excitement for the program’s future.
