Macon County commissioners and school board members Monday discussed funding for the Macon County vocational school addition.
“We’ve got two building projects that we really need to begin, and I’ve got enough money in fund balance to pay for one and part of another one, but I don’t have enough money to pay for both of them,†Macon County Director of Schools Shawn Carter said.
The vocational wing is projected to cost $6.6 million, according to rough estimates from the design team, Carter said.
“The multi-sports facility is projected to come in around $7.5 million,†Carter said. “We’re just looking for any (funding). I’d love it if they paid for one project and its completion. If they pay for half of one of the projects, that would be wonderful.â€
Macon County Mayor Steve Jones said that several citizens showed up to voice their comments about the projects.
“We gave them time to talk, and it was obvious that they supported the vocational school,†Jones said. “No one wants to see taxes increased, but it was a good meeting. The school board will go back and review what took place on their side, and then the county commission will carry it to our November meeting.â€
Macon County has a $65 wheel tax on regular vehicles and a $45 wheel tax on motorcycles that was set up to pay debt on various projects, according to Jones.
Macon commissioners next meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3, at the Macon County Administrative Building at 201 Nature Trail Way.
Carter said the school board would be discussing their next steps at their Nov. 13 school board meeting at 6 p.m. at Central Elementary School on Sycamore Street.
