Both Green Hill teams and Mt. Juliet boys will join mainstay Friendship Christian in the TSSAA State Bowling Championships which begin a three-day run today at Smyrna Bowling Center.
The individual tournament will be held today beginning at 8:30 a.m. and continue through the 3 p.m. finals.
Mt. Juliet senior Savannah Wilhoite enters as the top qualifier based on region score with a 1285. Her teammate, sophomore Ellie Anderson, is fourth with an 1172. Green Hill senior Nicola D’Avirro, junior Lindsey Nelson and freshman Jordyn Yeargin and Lebanon junior Emylie Johnson will also compete in the Division I girls’ tournament.
In DI boys will be Mt. Juliet senior Isaac Craig and sophomore Will Determann and Green Hill sophomores L.J. Grimaldi and Briggs Payne.
Sophomore Peyton Brown and juniors Zane Denney and state regular Brody West will represent Friendship in the Division II tournament.
Team competition begins Thursday with DI and II boys rolling off at 9 a.m. and the girls at 1 p.m. in quarterfinal action.
Both Mt. Juliet and Green Hill are in the final eight in DI girls. The 12-6 Lady Hawks, who edged Upperman 14-13 in last Saturday’s sectional at Bowling World in Cookeville, will face 16-1 Heritage with the winner catching either Franklin or the Hardin County dynasty in the semifinals.
In the other bracket, 19-0 Mt. Juliet will take on 22-0 Dickson County with the winner meeting Bartlett or Dobyns Bennett in the semis. The Lady Bears beat visiting Stone Memorial 16.5-10.5 in last Saturday’s sectional at Hermitage Strike & Spare after having beaten Green Hill 16-11 in the region final at Hendersonville Strike & Spare. MJ beat Beech 26-1 while Green Hill knocked off Liberty Creek 19-8 in the opening round of the region.
Mt. Juliet’s boys will bring a 21-1 record into battle with 17-4 Dobyns Bennett. The winner will take on the Tullahoma-Hardin County winner in the semifinals. The Golden Bears beat Stewarts Creek in the sectional at Hermitage Strike & Spare after winning the region with a 15-12 triumph over Green at Hendersonville. The Hawks lost to undefeated Siegel 22-5 in the sectional at Smyrna. MJ beat Liberty Creek 21-6 while Green Hill handled White House 17-10 in the region opener. Gatlinburg-Pittman, Creek Wood, Siegel and Bartlett are in the other state bracket.
Friendship’s boys are seeded second in the Middle Region with a 12-1 record and will take on West 2 Christian Brothers (8-2). The winner will face McCallie or Pope John Paul II in the semis. Columbia Academy, Father Ryan, St. Benedict and Boyd Buchanan are in the other bracket.
The Lady Commanders are fourth in the Middle Region at 5-5 and will face Middle Region winner Lipscomb Academy (10-2). The winner will take on St. Agnes or Boyd Buchanan. PJPII, St. Benedict, Girls Preparatory and St. Cecilia are in the other bracket.
