Golden Bears overtake Wildcats in OT for first district winMT. JULIET — Last Tuesday’s Wilson Central-Mt. Juliet game looked like a NASCAR race on a sheet of ice as both teams struggled with consistency in a textbook definition of an “ugly gameâ€.
But the 52-49 overtime win was a thing of beauty to the Golden Bears, who got their first District 7-4A win of the season and just their third overall in 26 outings.
“I think, and I may be wrong on the number, I think that’s nine games decides by four points or less,†Mt. Juliet coach Trey Tate said. “It’s one of those things we just had to figure out how to do it. We had to figure out how to dig deep and find ways to make plays that impact winning in a game like that. We were able to do it.â€
After trailing most of the first half, the Wildcats climbed back in the lead and appeared to be in good shape for a win. But Miles Daily’s first basket of the night, a 3-pointer from in front of the Mt. Juliet bench, brought the Golden Bears into a 41-41 tie in the final seconds of regulation, prompting four more minutes of basketball.
Wilson Central had the lead in overtime but again couldn’t hold it as Daly, who scored five of his eight points in OT, drove the baseline for the go-ahead basket with 10 seconds left for a 50-49 Mt. Juliet lead. Wilson Central missed on the other end and Connor McCarthy rebounded as the clock hit zero. But a foul was called and .3 was put back on the clock. McCarthy, who showed his hops on a second-quarter dunk, dropped in two free throws for the final margin.

The grind continued in the second as two free throws by Lane Ayars gave the Wildcats their first lead at 8-6. But McCarthy’s dunk tied the score midway through the quarter and two foul shots by Silas Kendall, who led Mt. Juliet with 18 points, put the Bear back in front as the hosts opened a 16-11 halftime lead.
Mt. Juliet opened the margin to 20-11 before point guard Ethan Ragland, held to two points to that point, led a comeback which featured 11 third-period points and a game-high 22 total. His steal led to a three-point play and a 20-20 tie, capping a 9-0 Wildcat run. Another three-point play by Ragland put Central back in front 23-22 and the visitors were ahead 28-24 going into the fourth.
