Cumberland senior guards Riggs Abner and Ty Buckley were named the Mid-South Conference Basketball Defensive Players of the Week on Monday by the league office.
Abner was a force on the glass in the Phoenix’s 88-69 season-opening win over Oakwood (Ala.), recording a double-double behind an impressive 11 defensive rebounds. His presence anchored Cumberland’s defensive effort, limiting second-chance opportunities and helping hold Oakwood to 36.8% shooting from the floor.
In addition to his defensive effort, Green Hill High School’s first graduate (because of the spelling of his last name, he was the first to receive a GHHS diploma in the new school’s first commencement ceremony in 2021) contributed across the board, finishing with 12 points, four field goals on six attempts (66.7%), and a perfect 3-for-3 mark at the free-throw line. He added two assists and a steal in 26 minutes of action.
The honor marks the first MSC weekly award of Abner’s career.
The Phoenix will be in action at home today to host Faulkner University. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.
On the women’s side, Buckley made an immediate impact in her Cumberland debut as the Phoenix defeated Oakwood (Ala.) 87-70 in their season opener. Buckley turned in a double-double with 12 rebounds and added three steals to lead a strong defensive effort.
The Meridian, Miss., native also contributed offensively with 13 points, shooting 5-of-18 from the field, while knocking down a pair of free throws and dishing out three assists in 28 minutes of action.
The award marks Buckley’s first MSC weekly honor of her career.
The Phoenix were at Bryan College on Monday night and will go to St. Louis this weekend for a Friday afternoon matchup with Point and a Saturday matinee with Central Methodist.
