FORREST CITY, Ark. - A man accused of violent crimes escaped from an Arkansas jail on Monday, according to Arkansas State Police (ASP) and the St. Francis County Sheriff's Office.Â
ASP said 38-year-old Christopher Davenport of Forrest City escaped from the St. Francis County Detention Center in Forrest City Monday night. He was in jail on multiple felony charges in connection with a shooting that happened this fall.Â
Investigators said Davenport, a trustee, walked away from the sally port while he was taking out the trash.Â
Detective Lieutenant Morris McNutt said the escape happened fast, and it was captured on surveillance cameras.Â
"Yesterday afternoon, around 6:21, Davenport was taking out the garbage. He kind of nervously pranced around the sally port area, then he left the garbage, and he left running," McNutt said.Â
Detective McNutt said it took a phone call to the jail to trigger a headcount.Â
"They came in and done a head count because someone called, inquired about him being out. Did a headcount and confirmed he was gone," McNutt said.Â
Davenport was a trustee at the jail, despite a long list of violent charges.Â
"He was in here for possession of a firearm, first-degree battery, criminal mischief, two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, and discharging a firearm within city limits," McNutt said.Â
Court records show Davenport was booked into the St. Francis County Detention Center in September after a shooting at the Star One Food Mart in Forrest City. Now, multiple agencies are looking for him, but no tips have panned out so far.Â
"Right now, there's a round-up. We've got help from outside entities, the federal marshals and the state police," McNutt said.Â
The detective told the community to be vigilant but not fearful.Â
"Just be careful," McNutt said. "I don't think he's going to be a real threat to anybody right now. He's hiding, and he doesn't want to be found."Â
Investigators could not immediately say how Davenport qualified for trustee status despite the charges against him.Â
Anyone with information about Davenport's whereabouts is asked to call the St. Francis Sheriff's Office at 870-633-2611 or the ASP Troop D at 870-633-1454.
