A special book signing was held at the Lebanon Wilson County Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, Nov. 19 with retired Wilson County Sheriff Terry Ashe.
Ashe is the author of two books, “Ashes of Bluebird,†an autobiography released in July 2012 and his newest book, “Daylight Moon (Vietnam: Reflections on a War I Never Left)†released in October 2025.
“After the release of my first book that had two chapters on Vietnam, veterans from all over contacted me and requested I write my story,†said Ashe. “In 2009, I started working on this book. I feel relief that I finally have it written and have the story out there. For the veterans that served in Vietnam, I don’t think any of them has really left there.â€
In “Daylight Moon,†Ashe revisits the battlefields that shaped his life and the faith that helped him find peace long after the fighting ended.
“This book is about a little country boy who couldn’t walk through the eerie shadows of the night without holding his father’s hand,†writes Ashe, “a child who became a man and learned he couldn’t walk through the valley of the shadow of death in Vietnam, without the hand of Jesus.â€
After receiving a draft card, he trained as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division and deployed to Vietnam. The near misses, close calls, and chance encounters from his time in service both tested and reaffirmed his faith and left their permanent mark on him.
Ashe was awarded three Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, and the Cross of Gallantry, among many other honors, for his heroic services as a paratrooper and recon scout.
After his tour of duty, Ashe began a career in public service that started as a sheriff’s deputy and led to being elected as sheriff of Wilson County for eight consecutive terms, making him one of the longest-serving sheriffs in the nation. Ashe now works with veterans, founding The Wilson Warriors organization to honor veterans and their families.
“I have a strong connection to the veterans in this community. I’m a veteran that’s served my country and I’m sharing my story,†said Ashe. “Under every veteran’s hat, there’s a story. Some may not tell it, but it’s there.â€
“Daylight Moon” is published by Archway, a division of Simon and Schuster, and is available on and Barnes & Noble.
