The 49th annual Hillbilly Days celebration has come and gone. People gathered for the opening night and enjoyed a calm evening of fun and pageantry. The temperature was nice with a slight breeze, and despite the mud from all the recent rainfall, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
Lafayette Mayor Tony Day opened the evening with prayer, and Macon County Mayor Steve Jones welcomed everyone, followed by Ken Yager, who briefly spoke to attendees.
“Thank you so much for having me,†said Yager. “There is not an event like this anywhere in my district. This is number one in Tennessee Hillbilly Days, and I want to thank the Lions and Lioness clubs for organizing the event. I am glad that I have the chance to represent Macon County, which is the fastest growing county in the Upper Cumberland, and the reason why is the people of Macon County have an agenda for the future. They know what they want, and they want to make sure that their children have a better life than they had. They have elected outstanding officials like both mayors that helped start the festivities with me tonight.
“Working together, they are moving this county forward in a progressive way,†he said. “I am honored to serve as your Senator. If you have any problems with the state of Tennessee, you can call Ken Yager, and I will work with you to try and find a resolution. I can’t help but give God the glory for this beautiful day. I thank God for a country that we can live freely in and have groups assemble like this. I am so grateful for him and how he allows us so many blessings. Thank you for letting me be here and thank you for letting me serve as your Senator. It is an honor, God bless.â€
Hillbilly Days attendee Jessica Felton said, “I love the food and the laughter that seems to follow through the celebration. My family comes every year, and we love Macon County. We are even thinking of moving here and it’s all because of how everyone treats us each year when we visit.â€
Jeff Wheeler said, “For me it’s the gathering of friends and family. I love coming home and seeing people that I haven’t seen all year. I may have moved away, but Macon County will always be my home.â€
Ricky Taylor said, “I remember going up on the square when Hillbilly Days was up there. I always had fun with my friends and family. We didn’t have a lot growing up, but we had each other and Hillbilly Days was one of those times when all of us got together and laughed, had fun, and enjoyed some food with everyone. It was the best of times.â€
Amy Curtis said, “There’s one thing about the south, we know how to get together and have fun. I look forward to Hillbilly Days every year. The music is my favorite part.â€
