MT. JULIET — Mt. Juliet’s girls survived a missed Green Hill shot at the final buzzer last Tuesday night to complete the season sweep of its city rival 40-39 on the Hill.
The Lady Bears led 30-19 going into the fourth quarter before Green Hill rallied. Mt. Juliet was ahead 10-4 in the first quarter and 23-11 at halftime.
Mt. Juliet emerged with a 20-7 record and 9-1 in District 7-4A, needing to only beat Gallatin on Friday or win at Lebanon on Saturday to clinch the top seed in the tournament. Green Hill fell to 22-3, 8-3 with only a trip to Beech remaining Friday before the tournament, which will be held at Beech.
Addy Osborne led the Lady Bears with 15 points while fellow guard Aaliyah Holman had 11, including a pair of 3-pointers. McClaine Ringenberg also racked up two triples on her way to eight points. Claire Emery finished with four points, eight rebounds and five steals. Makayla Hopson had two points.
Kataira (KT) Tolbert led all scorers with 20 points for Green Hill to go with three assists and three steals. Willa Heilman had nine points and 11 rebounds while Juliana Mitchell finished with five points, McKenna Solomon a 3-pointer and McKinlee Parker two.
Smith County comes from behind to stun Devilettes
CARTHAGE — Lebanon appeared headed to a win Tuesday night in a battle of top-10 teams - albeit in different classifications - before host Smith County roared back in the final half of the fourth quarter to snatch a 47-44 victory.
The Devilettes were up 42-32 with 4:30 to play. But the Lady Owls, ranked No. 8 in the TSWA/USA Today Class 2A poll, hit all five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.
Emry Jones scored and was fouled on an inbounds play with two seconds left to snap a 44-44 tie. Following her free throw, Lebanon, ranked No. 5 in the 4A poll, missed a decent-look 3 at the buzzer as the Devilettes, on an open date from the District 7-4A grind, fell to 20-5.
Smith County, believed to be hosting Lebanon for the first time since the 1991-92 season (Campbell Brandon’s final year as LHS coach) climbed to 17-10.
Lebanon led 15-8 at the first-quarter break and 22-17 at halftime.
Jones led the Lady Owls with 12 points, seven rebounds and four steals.
Ellie Beth McDonald dropped in two 3-pointers as she led Lebanon with 12points while Tiara Spencer scored 11. Naleiya Withrow-Walker and Carleigh Barrett each tossed in two triples for six apiece while Tramaria Neal finished with five and Maggie Kelley four.
Lady Wildcats win third straight
GLADEVILLE — With less than a week left in the regular season, Wilson Central’s girls are suddenly one of the hottest teams in District 7-4A.
The Lady Wildcats posted their third straight district win last Tuesday night, and second over a team which had previously beaten them, 48-39 over visiting Hendersonville in Central’s home finale.
Central stormed out to a 16-9 first-quarter lead. The Lady ‘Cats carried a 24-20 lead into halftime and 38-34 into the fourth before closing out the Lady Commandos with a 10-5 final stanza.
Freedom Pfeil led the Lady Wildcats with 12 points and six assists while Brylee Fly finished with 10 points. Ellie Ramsey racked up nine points and seven rebounds. Alexis Jackson and senior Kiley Jo Byrom posted matching numbers of six points on two 3-pointers apiece. Kylie Moss managed five points, seven rebounds and four steals.
The Lady Wildcats were coming off a 70-40 Monday-night win at Gallatin to complete the season sweep of the Lady Wave, who led 16-15 at the first-quarter break before Central used a 23-4 second period to surge to a 38-20 lead going into halftime. It was 63-31 at the end of the third quarter.
Pfeil scored 16 points to lead the Lady ‘Cats. Ramsey racked up 13, including two 3s. Moss notched nine rebounds, nine assists and five steals as she and Olivia Kinning each collected nine points while Fly finished with eight points, Riley Mirghavami and Alexis Jackson four each, Byrom a 3, Annie Wilson two and Sophia Cooper and Emma Jackson a free throw apiece.
Watertown moves to 5-0 in district with one game left
WATERTOWN — Watertown ran its District 8-3A record to 5-0 with one game to play last Tuesday night, edging Macon County 49-46.
The Lady Purple Tigers led 15-10 at the first-quarter break, 29-24 at halftime and 39-34 going into the fourth.
Molly Followill fired in two 3-pointers to lead the Lady Purple Tigers with 14 points while Macie Brelje managed 12 and Maddie Willard 10. Julianna Pruitt finished with five and Dailey Height and Bryley Bowers four each.
Allie Kate Austin tossed in two 3-pointers and 8 of 9 free throws in leading Macon County (the Tigerettes) with a game-high 20 points.
Watertown closed the regular season Friday in Smithville against DeKalb County and will host the district tournament this week. All four teams in the district are the Tigers.
Nashville Christian turns back Friendship in district tournament opener
NASHVILLE — Host Nashville Christian took control early Tuesday night and advanced in the District 4-IIA tournament with a first-round elimination of Friendship Christian 54-38.
Friendship led 4-2 early. But a 9-0 run send the Lady Eagles into a 13-4 lead. It was 19-6 at the first-quarter break and 28-12 at halftime.
The Lady Commanders closed the third quarter with an 11-2 run to cut the margin to 41-32 going into the fourth. They got as close as 48-36 before the Lady Eagles scored the final six to move into Friday’s semifinals with a 16-11 record.
Friendship’s season is finished at 8-16.
Aniston Allgood led the Lady Eagles with 24 points while Anadia Hinton hit two 3-pointers during her 10-point first period as she finished with 14.
Eighth-grader Haivyn Boone led Friendship with 13 points while senior Natalie Major added 11 as the pair combined for 13 third-period points to key the second-half rally. Norah Box and Ella Bryson each finished with five, all in the second half, while Anna Kate Reed racked up four in the second quarter.
