As part of the renovation to the Lebanon Town Square, the Neddy Jacobs cabin is being torn down to make room for a new park.
In December of last year, the Lebanon City Council approved bids and awarded a contract to Stockton Building for construction of a Lebanon Square Northwest Quadrant Park. According to city officials, the park will include green space, a concert stage area and seating for families.
The work began Monday as crews started tearing down the Neddy Jacobs Cabin. Lebanon Mayor Rick Bell, also the City Historian, said the cabin is not the original, but a replica, and is in disrepair and there is no “good place†to move it to. The replica was built in 2002.
“As the town square has been reinvigorated in recent years through public and private investment, the northwest quadrant of the square needed to be renovated to better reflect the square’s character, which includes removing the cabin,†Bell said. “We will do our best to minimize any impact on parking, and safety is always a concern, as the sidewalk in the quadrant will also be affected and blocked off during construction. It’s important for me to let everyone know that this park is long overdue, and I’m excited to add it back to our square.â€
The sidewalk along portions of the roundabout connecting Main Street and North Cumberland Street will be closed while construction takes place, which is expected to last approximately six months.
“I appreciate the Lebanon City Council seeing the vision for the new park that will continue to make the town square the destination it has become,†Bell added.
Initially, the historical cabin replica would be history; however, it has a new home on the farm of Allison and John D’Andria’s property.
Allison has an agricultural educational nonprofit called Maple Hill Ranch, and the Neddy Jacobs cabin will be used as a teaching tool, showing children what life in the 19th Century was like.
