WATERTOWN — A year after suffering a bitterly disappointing home loss to underdog Westmoreland in this game, Watertown appeared to be on the way to repeating its fate against Trousdale County in the Region 3-2A tournament opener Monday.
But on a raining evening which was interrupted by a one-hour, 24-minute delay following the second inning, Reagan Way’s pinch-hit RBI single scored Zoey Thomas with the walk-off run as the Lady Purple Tigers knocked off their longtime rival 5-4.
The Lady Jackets went up 4-3 in the top of the seventh on a throwing error after a popup was dropped and another drive went off the center-fielder’s glove at the wall.
Trousdale reliever Sara Link retired the first two Lady Tigers in the top of the seventh. But Abby Smith kept Watertown alive with a single and scored on Thomas’ double,.
The win lifted the 17-11 Lady Tigers to tomorrow’s region championship game at either Liberty Creek or at home against Monterey as Watertown is seeking its first region title. A Wednesday win will mean a home sectional Friday while the loser goes on the road.
Kay McGuire, who pitched five in relief of starter Avery Taylor following the delay, was the winner. She gave up two runs (one earned) on seven hits, two hit batters and no walks while striking out five.
Trousdale County outhit Watertown 10-9 but led after scoring two runs in the second inning until there were two out in the seventh.
Alyssa Wood gave the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead in the first inning as she came home on a delayed double steal.
Trousdale County added a run in the third inning. Both teams squandered scoring opportunities through much of the moist night. The Lady Tigers finally tallied in the fifth and sixth to pull even.
McGuire didn’t have a hit but was credited with two RBIs. Olivia Lester doubled as she and Taylor had two hits apiece for Watertown.
Lady Hawks bomb McGavock 21-0 in two innings; Stockwell hits 300-foot bomb to campus boundary fence
MT. JULIET — Green Hill moved Monday’s Region 6-4A tournament game up 90 minutes in an attempt to avoid weather issues.
The Lady Hawk hitters thundered to a 21-0 two-inning triumph over McGavock which was over well before those 90 minutes were up.
Chezney Whipker’s two-run homer and Jayla Page’s three-run bomb staked Green Hill to a 7-0 lead before an out was recorded.
Avary Stockwell homered later in the inning. But it was her second blast of the afternoon, in the second inning, which may already be the stuff of legend. Her drive cleared the outfield wall and hit the fence at the top of the berm which marks the back boundary of the campus an estimated 300 feet from home plate.
In addition, Kendall Davis hit an RBI triple to the left-field corner to open the scoring. Julia O’Donnell hit a two-run double in the second.
Green Hill will play in the region final at 6 p.m. today seeking a third straight championship. Mt. Juliet was leading John Overton 7-0 in the third inning when weather halted play Monday. Coach Kevin Costley said the teams planned to try to finish the contest Tuesday. That winner and Green Hill will advance to Friday’s sectional with Wednesday’s winner hosting and the loser going on the road.
