COOKEVILLE — Green Hill scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns last Friday night as the Hawks rallied to a 35-20 triumph over Cookeville at Eddie Watson Stadium.
Caden Chandler’s extra point following Zach Cartwright’s 1-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter put Green Hill ahead 21-20. Kannon Burroughs threw touchdown passes of 15 yards to Dylan Hawks and 10 to Omeiza Daniyan, stretching the lead as the Hawks moved into first place in Region 4-6A at 2-0, 4-2 overall. The second score was set up by Will Butler’s interception and 68-yard return to the Cookeville 15-yard line.
Cartwright ran for 198 yards on 21 carries. Burroughs completed 14 of 20 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns.
Nathaniel Brogden gave Green Hill the first lead with a 4-yard run midway through the first quarter. The Hawks, who recovered a Cookeville fumble to set up that score, lost their next four possessions on fumbles.
Cookeville tied the score with 5:11 left in the first period on a 50-yard run by Blake Barrett, who led the Cavaliers with 172 yards on 17 carries. Easton Davidson’s 69-yard pass to Caden Sisco put the hosts ahead 13-7 midway through the second after the extra point failed.
That opened the door for Chandler to boot Green Hill back into the lead 14-13 following Burroughs’ 3-yard scoring run with 2:25 left in the half, ending the Hawks’ string of turnovers.
Davidson, who completed half of his 20 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns and two interceptions, flipped a 5-yard scoring pass to Trey Miller 11 seconds before intermission for a 20-14 CHS lead.
Neither team scored in the third quarter.
Green Hill took a break from region action last night as the Hawks entertained Glencliff on the Hill in what was GH’s last regular-season game against a team from outside Wilson County. Following next week’s open date, Green Hill will begin its stretch run of Region 4-6A games against local rivals, starting with the Oct. 17 home finale against Lebanon.
