DUNLAP — Watertown and host Sequatchie County engaged in a shootout for the Region 4-3A lead last Friday with the Indians emerging with a 35-28 triumph.
A 17-yard touchdown pass on a fade to the left corner of the end zone and the quarterback’s two-point run midway through the fourth quarter put Sequatchie County ahead.
Watertown punted the ball from near midfield, but Sequatchie County was able to run out the clock as the Indians took the region lead at 3-0, 5-2 overall.
The Purple Tigers entered their fall break open date at 4-3, 2-1 as their four-game winning streak ended.
Brody Osborne’s extra point put the Purple Tigers ahead 28-27 early in the fourth following Garrett Davis’ 3-yard touchdown run off right tackle.
Sequatchie County snapped a 21-21 tie on an 8-yard pass on a slant late in the third quarter. A botched snap on the extra point left the Indians with a 27-21 lead.
Earlier in the period, Davis intercepted a pass and returned it to the Sequatchie 26-yard line. Playing quarterback, he scored on a 24-yard run down the right sideline for the 21-31 tie.
Sequatchie County, which missed an extra point in the first half, overcame a one-point halftime deficit with a 35-yard run by the quarterback. The two-point pass was good for a 21-14 Indians lead.
The teams traded first-quarter touchdowns with Landon Harper weaving his way through the first layer of the Sequatchie County defense for a 4-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 Watertown lead.
Sequatchie County came back with a 1-yard tying touchdown run.
Watertown was driving for a go-ahead score early in the second quarter when Sequatchie County recovered a fumble on the 3-yard line. But the Indians had to punt and the return set up the Tigers on the Indians’ 24.
An 11-yard run by Will Burns put the Purple Tigers ahead 14-7.
A deep pass set up Sequatchie County for a 1-yard touchdown run. The extra point failed, leaving Watertown with a 14-13 edge, which held into halftime after Osborne’s 39-yard field-goal try on the final play fell short.
Following the bye week, Watertown will travel to Cascade as the Tigers try to stay in the top two of the region standings.
