Lebanon rekindles ancient rivalry with 2OT triumph at Smith County
CARTHAGE — In 15 years as Lebanon coach after four earlier seasons as a Blue Devil player, Jim McDowell had never been in Smith County’s gym.
What he experienced last Tuesday may have been what these meetings were like in a bygone era before classification when Lebanon and Smith County met twice annually most seasons in what could have been a natural rivalry between schools from adjacent counties, though it appears neither was ever in the same district. Once a three-tier classification was implemented in 1976, Lebanon played in Class AAA and Smith County in AA. During most of the early years in AAA, the Blue Devils didn’t often play teams from another class. Though they and Owls could have met in a holiday tournament, it’s not believed they have met in a regularly-scheduled contest in more than three decades.
Playing before a packed house, the Blue Devils emerged from what is believed to be their first game in Carthage since the 1991-92 season with a 67-64 double-overtime win.
Lebanon led by 17 points in the third quarter before Cooper Williams led a Smith County comeback with nine points in the fourth quarter and Coco Rigsby racked up a pair of 3-pointers in the same stanza. Morgan Sinclair’s sixth triple of the night, well covered, banked home to force overtime at 57-57.
Smith County won the overtime tip and, with Lebanon staying back in a zone, held the ball for about 2 1/2 minutes. The Blue Devils’ Elliott Greer missed a tie-breaking 3-pointer at the end of the four-minute stanza, sending the contest to a second OT.
The Blue Devils built a five-point lead in the second overtime. Zay Anglin hit a key free throw and Smith County missed a 3 at the end which could have sent the game to a third OT.
Instead, Lebanon returned home with a 13-11 record with District 7-4A home games last weekend against Wilson Central and Mt. Juliet before the tournament tips off this week at Beech.
T.J. Searcy scored 23 points, all in regulation, to lead Class 4A Lebanon. Those included three triples. Amaure Manier managed four points and Marques Anglin three in the overtimes as each finished with 15. Evan Klemm scored six points, Greer five, John Binion two and Zay Anglin the free throw.
Cooper Williams led Smith County, a 2A school with 20 points while Sinclair scored 19.
Lebanon led 18-11 following the first quarter, 38-25 at halftime and 48-37 going into the fourth.
Wildcats emerge with 54-50 win over Hendersonville
GLADEVILLE — Wilson Central emerged from its home finale last Tuesday night with a 54-50 win over Hendersonville.
The teams were knotted at 9-9 following the first quarter before Central slipped ahead 27-22 at halftime and 37-32 going into the fourth.
Grafton Graves knocked down nine of his Wilson Central-leading 12 points in the first quarter. Colton McClellan notched nine points while Ethan Ragland, Cooper Jones and Ross Perlick each pitched in eight, Lane Ayars six in the second quarter and Will Rose three.
Mont Seagraves sank three fourth-quarter 3-pointers as he kept the Commandos in the contest with 13 points. Ayden Meadows threw in two triples in the second as he and Weston Hall each had 12.
Brown’s bombs pull Purple Tigers to fourth-quarter win
WATERTOWN — Watertown came from behind in the fourth quarter last Tuesday night to overtake Macon County 62-57.
Macon County led 49-45 going into the fourth before Devon Brown buried three of his four 3-pointers during his 11-point stanza to lead the Purple Tigers’ 17-8 quarter.
The teams were tied 13-13 following the first quarter before Watertown used a 21-15 second toto up 31-28 at halftime. Macon County outscored the Purple Tigers 21-11 in the third.
Brown scored 18 points and Cayden Clark 17 for Watertown. Carlos Shannon added all eight of his tallies in the second quarter while Jack Beasley and Clay Hawkins each scored six, Conner Parkerson four and Dacio Carter three fourth-period free throws.
Braylon Marshall scored 17 points, Aiden Barlow and McKade Mix 13 each and Brody Huffines 11 for Macon County.
The Purple Tigers finished their regular season last Friday at DeKalb County and will host the District 8-3A tournament this week. All four teams - Watertown, Macon County, DeKalb County and Central Magnet - are the Tigers.
