Results from Week 2 of the Lebanon Church League games played Feb. 7 at First Baptist Church Lebanon:
First Baptist Watertown 62, Cornerstone Baptist-Carthage 53The first game of the day saw an even battle with multiple lead changes in the second half.
Cornerstone led by three at halftime. But despite combo guard Paul Byrnes’ 27-point effort, it trailed by two points with three minutes to play.
Watertown knocked down nine free throws in the second half to extend the lead. Its balanced attack saw four scorers with nine or more points, led by shooting guard Austin Lasater with16.
Maple Hill Church of Christ 42, St. Frances Cabrini 37, overtimeFor the second straight week, the team leading at halftime failed to close out the game. St. Frances led by four at the break before it’s fast-paced attack was slowed by Maple Hill’s large 2-3 zone as it was held to 12 points in the second half and OT.
Maple Hill fed the post as much as possible as 6-foot-8 youth minister Alex Rush tossed in 12 points and frontcourt partner Hanley Sobiesczcyk 11.
For the second straight week, 53-year-old midrange specialist Criss Cheatham led St.Frances with 12 points.
Pickett Rucker UMC 72, Generation Changers 44Defending champion Pickett Rucker continued its domination with a balanced offensive attack as four players scored between 11 and 14 points. Kadarian Garnett and Connor Pelham each had 14.
Generation Changers tried to slow PR down in the first half, trailing 32-19 at the break. But Pickett Rucker’s depth wore down GC’s defense and beat it in transition. Shooting guard Kendall Williams led Generation Changers with 20 points.
The Journey 40, Connect 38In one of the more exciting games in league history, The Journey’s director of young adult ministry, Hunter Christian, hit a one-handed fallaway runner from beyond the arc in the corner with defender K.J. Laribo draped all over him for the walk-off winner.
The first half was a low-scoring slog that saw both teams employ a 2-3 defense to cut off the big men. The Journey led 17-14 at the break.
But the pace changed midway through the second half as shots began to fall for both teams. Six-foot-6 big man Landen Engles stepped out to hit two 3-pointers to lead a 9-0 Journey run that seemed to put the game away.
But Connect came back with a run of its own behind 6-5 post Kene Aruh, who led his team with 11 points. Trailing by a point in the closing seconds, Aruh was double-covered inside, which led to small forward Laribo putting up a midrange baseline jumper that swished in.
Officials conferred and put 2.5 seconds on the clock. The Journey threw the ball to midcourt and spent its last timeout at 1.7 ticks. The ensuing inbounds pass went to Christian, who took a dribble towards the corner and hit the walk-off 3, giving him a game-high 15 for the day.
Crossroads Fellowship 43, Victory Baptist 37Crossroads got its first win behind a deep lineup which saw nine players score. Shooting guard Chaseton Dixon gave it a quick lead as he drained all 11 of his points in the first half.
The second half was more of a defensive battle as Victory geared its defense to stopping Dixon and cutting down on fastbreak opportunities. The comeback came up short despite forward Judd Hill’s team-high 11 points, nine of which came after halftime.
Immanuel Baptist 61, Bethlehem Church of Christ 51Immanuel knocked down three triples to help build a double-digit lead within the first 10 minutes. Following a timeout, Bethlehem switched from a 2-3 zone to a man-to-man, which slowed down the 3-pointers, but did little to slow the fastbreak.
Guard Caleb Lawrence led Immanuel with 25 points. His team held a 16-point halftime lead and built it to 25 before Bethlehem cut it to 10 within the last seven minutes.
Mark Sandoval scored a game-high 27 points for Bethlehem.
Providence 80, Crosspoint 41The last game of the day was closer than the final score as Providence struggled to pull away at the beginning. But a multi-pronged attack proved too much for Crosspoint to stop.
Point guard Zac Anderson, the associate director of student ministries, directed five different Providence players into double figures, including shooting guard Braden Neal, who knocked down a team-high 19 points. Anderson himself added 11.
Crosspoint’s own combo guard, Caden Krout, matched Neal’s 19 points. But none of his teammates could reach double figures.
