A traffic stop conducted by Mt. Juliet Police on Tuesday resulted in the arrest of a man reportedly on the run for 30 years.
Police say he was pulled over for running a stop sign and driving without headlights on Lebanon Road near Matterhorn Drive; however, a records search on the driver returned an active warrant, issued in 1995, for drug charges in Rutherford County.
The man, 53-year-old Donald Fields, was allegedly in possession of cocaine, marijuana and materials believed to be related to the resale of marijuana. He was also reportedly driving on a suspended license.
According to police, Fields initially resisted officers, but was eventually safely taken into custody. He was booked into the Wilson County Jail and charged with possession of a Schedule VI drug (marijuana) for resale, possession of a Schedule II drug (cocaine), driving on a suspended license and resisting arrest.
Fields was released on a $5,500 bond.
Also during the incident, MJPD said an uninvolved individual drove by the scene and shouted at officers regarding their presence. Police said this individual was the same person who questioned MJPD presence in February, claiming the department has no jurisdiction in Hermitage, where a suspect was stopped after the initial crime was said to have happened in Mt. Juliet.
“MJPD remains committed to pushing back against cross-border criminal activity,†the department said. “With Mt. Juliet’s city limits directly connected to Nashville, our officers regularly patrol near the county line to prevent crime from entering our community.â€
MJPD also addressed the jurisdiction question.
“Mt. Juliet Police officers have full legal authority to initiate and carry out traffic stops when violations originate in our city, regardless of where the stop is completed,†they said.
