The 2025 Wilson County — Tennessee State Fair kicked off Thursday evening with an opening celebration including Gov. Bill Lee as a guest speaker.
Although crowds were already partaking in fair events, a crowd gathered at the Made In Tennessee Building on the fairgrounds to commemorate the fair. Wilson County Mayor Randall Hutto gave opening remarks and a prayer.
Soldiers from the Tennessee Army National Guard presented the colors during the flag raising. Both the U.S. flag and the Tennessee flag are flying over the fairgrounds for the next 10 days of fair celebration.
Another Tennessee state flag, one flown during Barry Wilmore’s stay aboard the International Space Station, is framed and on display at the Made In Tennessee Building.
The Wilson County Fair became the Tennessee State Fair five years ago, and since then the Department of Agriculture, Department of Tourism and other state officials have worked to showcase the two top industries in the state — agriculture and tourism. Aspects of both are not only represented within the fair itself, but also with exhibits featuring all 95 counties in Tennessee in the Made in Tennessee Building.
“Some people say the Tennessee State Fair is the world’s largest outdoor classroom,†Charlie Hatcher, Commissioner of Agriculture said. “You know, I think that’s true. Tennessee farmers and foresters right now are experiencing a tremendous amount of economic stress. So if you see one, give them a hug and tell them thank you for what they do.â€
“This is the best fair in the country because we live in the best state in the country,†Lee said. “This fair started in 1855 and it has changed the lives of Tennesseans throughout the generations.â€
Another aspect celebrated during this year’s fair is the upcoming 250th birthday of the U.S. As part of the America 250 Celebration over the next year leading up to next July 4, Lee and Tennessee First Lady Maria Lee say they plan to tour each county in the state.
Other speakers included State Rep. Clark Boyd; Chris Kirkland, editor of the Tennessee Magazine, and Randall Clemons, President of Wilson County Promotions.
