The Macon County Tigerettes girls basketball team continued to show growth and resilience the week of Jan. 20, picking up a solid win before battling through a tough stretch of road games and weather disruptions.
On Jan. 20, the Tigerettes hosted the Allen County-Scottsville Lady Patriots and were able to defend their home floor with a hard-earned 56-48 victory.
Macon County’s success was fueled by strong play in the paint, an area where the team has excelled as of late. Senior forward Kaylee Slayton once again proved to be a force down low, as she has been averaging 11 points per game while pulling down an impressive 14 rebounds per contest. Her physical presence and rebounding have been key factors in the Tigerettes’ recent success.
Senior guard Katie Jo Shockley also continues to lead from the perimeter, averaging 10 points per game along with six assists and two steals. Shockley’s ability to control the tempo, distribute the basketball and apply pressure on defense has made her an essential piece of the Tigerettes’ lineup.
Following the win, Macon County traveled to DeKalb County for their first District 8-3A game of the season. The Tigerettes fought until the final buzzer but ultimately came up just short, falling 61-58 in a tightly contested matchup. Despite the loss, Macon County showed they can compete at a high level in region play.
The Tigerettes were scheduled to play again Jan. 27 against visiting Watertown, but icy weather conditions forced that game to be rescheduled for this past Tuesday.
Macon County currently sits at 9-8 on the season and the Tigerettes will look to build momentum as they head into the heart of their schedule, with district play and key matchups looming ahead.
