A Wilson County man is charged with first degree murder in connection to the disappearance of an elderly man in North Carolina last year.
Wilson County deputies, in coordination with the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina, apprehended Nicolai Hubbeling, 21, of Old Hickory, at his residence on Thursday, May 29.
In late August 2024, 81-year-old William Scott Lowry of Ammon, North Carolina, was reported missing, last seen walking near his home. The investigation ran cold until Bladen County deputies received an anonymous tip in April.
According to authorities, the anonymous caller said Hubbeling told acquaintances of his love of killing animals and dissecting them, but eventually wanted more than that. The tip says Hubbeling allegedly said he shot and killed Lowry who was walking on a rural road and disposed of his body in an unknown location.
Bladen County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division began conducting interviews and following up on multiple leads, concluding that Hubbeling had recently been discharged from the military and had relocated back to Tennessee.
WCSO worked with the North Carolina authorities in planning for Hubbeling’s arrest. When both agencies went to Hubbeling’s residence, he allegedly was attempting to leave, leading to a coordinated vehicle take-down.
Hubbeling is currently being held without bond at the Wilson County Jail awaiting extradition to Bladen County, North Carolina.
Law enforcement says the investigation remains active and ongoing, with further information to be released by Bladen County deputies as it becomes available.
