A Gallatin High School teacher was arrested Thursday following an investigation into reports of inappropriate contact with a student, according to a joint statement from Sumner County Schools and the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office.
Jamie Owens, a criminal justice teacher at the school, was taken into custody and charged with one count of sexual battery by an authority figure, one count of false imprisonment, and one count of simple assault.
The investigation began the morning of March 19 after a student reported the encounter to a school administrator, who then notified the on-site school resource officer.
Sumner County Schools Superintendent Scott Langford confirmed that Owens has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the criminal case.
"The safety and well-being of our children remain our highest priority, and we will take all necessary actions to ensure that anyone engaging in this type of conduct is held accountable," Langford said. "We stand with Sheriff Craddock and are deeply thankful for our SROs."
Sheriff Eric Craddock praised the student for coming forward, noting that the SRO Special Investigations Unit acted swiftly once the report was made.
"Let me be clear, there is no place in our schools for anyone who would violate the trust placed in them to protect and guide our students," Craddock said. "We will hold individuals accountable and we will continue working side-by-side with our school partners to ensure every student has a safe and secure learning environment."
Authorities are asking anyone with additional information regarding the case to contact the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office.
