GAINESBORO — The Red Boiling Springs Bulldogs’ struggles continued last Friday night as they dropped their fourth straight game of the season, falling 49-8 to the Jackson County Blue Devils at Jackson County High School.
The loss left the Bulldogs at 0-4, while the Blue Devils improved to 3-1.
The game began with early trouble for the Bulldogs who received the opening kickoff but fumbled on third down. Blue Devil senior lineman Jaren Dill pounced on the ball, setting up prime field position. On the very next play, sophomore quarterback Colt Loftis connected with senior Aden Netherton on a quick screen pass. Netherton weaved 30 yards into the end zone, adding the extra point himself to put Jackson County up 7-0.
The Blue Devils wasted little time adding to their lead. Following another Bulldog turnover, sophomore running back Braiden Dotson muscled in from 6 yards out to make it 14-0. Later in the first quarter, Loftis found senior receiver Skylar Stacy in the end zone after yet another RBS fumble, stretching the lead to 21-0. Dotson capped off the first-quarter surge with a second rushing score, this one from 9 yards out, making it 28-0.
The Blue Devils kept rolling in the second quarter. Senior CJ Collier broke free for a rushing touchdown to make it 35-0, and sophomore Kaden Birdwell added another score before halftime. With Netherton perfect on PATs, Jackson County carried a commanding 42-0 lead into the break.
After halftime, junior Jacob Lewis pushed across another touchdown run for the Blue Devils, extending the lead to 49-0.
The Bulldogs, however, refused to leave the field empty-handed. With six minutes left in the fourth quarter, Red Boiling Springs’ defense forced a turnover on downs, and on the very next play, junior Tyler Jines electrified the visitors’ sideline with a 70-yard touchdown run. The Bulldogs added a two-point conversion to avoid the shutout, bringing the final score to 49-8.
Despite the late spark, turnovers plagued Red Boiling Springs all evening, allowing Jackson County to build its insurmountable lead.
The Bulldogs (0-4) will look to regroup this week as they return home to host Monterey on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
