The Lafayette City Council has approved the bid for J. Cumby Construction Inc. to move forward with operations to expand the city water treatment plant. The initial bid was $6,330,000 with five alternate deductive options. Evan J. White with Mid Tenn Engineering went over the bid and suggested to the council that Alternate A ($6,200,000) would be the best choice and save the city an estimated $120,000.
Lafayette Mayor Tony Day explained what that actually means for the project.
“The initial bid was $6,330,000 and that included some extra materials that Mid Tenn Engineering advised that we could do without,†said Day. “We went with their advice and chose Alternate A. The project will take 30-60 days to get things in order, and we hope to see construction start by the end of this summer. Once begun, the project will take an estimated 365 days to complete.â€
In other action, the council accepted the resignation letter of Kassidy Hollis from the Lafayette Police Department. Renee Harper will be taking the open position. Logan Swindle has been hired as a new officer with the Lafayette Police Department
The council also accepted the resignations of Phillip Smith, Josh England and Michael Evetts from the Lafayette Fire Department. Fire Chief Todd Wagoner stated that the resignations were not negative and he wishes all three well. Kolt Evans has been hired to take Smith’s open position.
Council members also learned that the road work on Days Road on the side of the Lafayette City Park should be finished within a couple weeks.
“The water from all the rain we had earlier this year really hurt that section of the road,†said Day. “We hope to have it finished as soon as possible and apologize for any inconvenience it may cause. The roadway was unsafe in its condition after the storms.â€
Before the meeting there were two public hearings. The first concerned a request to amend the zoning for 802 Red Boiling Springs Road from R-1 low density residential to C-2 general business district.
The second hearing concerned the passing of the city of Lafayette budget and property tax rate of .55 cents per $100 of assessed value on all real and personal property.
