BELLEVUE — Chaz Martin added a pair of rushing touchdowns to his senior campaign last Friday night as Wilson Central scampered past host James Lawson 12-3.
They say lightning never strikes in the same place twice, and the Wilson Central (4-0) defense verified this statement, holding James Lawson (1-2) to a lone score: a field goal.
Both teams featured a multi-faceted rushing attack that devoured the game clock. Neither team scored a touchdown in the first half. Miscues, fumbled snaps and interceptions plagued the first two stanzas. This led to several punts and takeaways in favorable territory. However, all that resulted before the intermission was a James Lawson field goal.
The Wildcats’ single-wing offense, spearheaded by Martin at running back, idled to begin the game. However, as many run-heavy offenses prove, the Lightning defense began to fatigue in the second half.
Martin finally broke free in the second half, scampering past the Lightning secondary for a 55-yard touchdown for the Wildcats’ first score of the game. Lawson Brewer’s PAT struck the left upright and fell no good, bringing the score to 6-3.
Lawson was unable to answer, giving Martin and the Wildcats a chance to extend their three-point lead. They did exactly that. Martin capped the drive off with a 46-yard rush for his second touchdown of the night and 12th of the season. The Wildcats ran a trick play on the two-point conversion attempt, but the pass was intercepted in the end zone, leaving the score at 12-3.
Through the rest of the game, the Lightning were silenced. The Wildcat defense fixed its porous first half, shutting down numerous plays behind the line of scrimmage. Although Wilson Central was not able to score again, it ticked several minutes off of the game clock on each drive.
After they received the ball again, the Wildcats knelt the ball into finality, giving the Wildcats their sixth 4-0 start in school history — and first since 2019.
Arguably more impressive, the Wildcats are undefeated while attempting less than 10 passes per game. Martin continued his streak of 100-plus rushing-yard games; he averaged 198 per game entering the night.
The Wildcats enter Region 4-6A play unscathed, where they will play host to the Cavaliers of Cookeville on Friday night. Senior Night festivities are scheduled for this region opener, honoring the class of 2026. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
