COOKEVILLE — Wilson Central scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning Monday night to knock off Stewarts Creek 4-2 in the District 7-4A championship round Monday night at Tennessee Tech, forcing the “if necessary” game last night. The winner-take-all game was held at WCHS. It was a rematch of last year’s title game won by the Wildcats at Stewarts Creek.
The Red Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning against starter Ty Fleenor.
Nicholas Ferrara took over in the third and held Stewarts Creek to one hit and a hit batter while striking out four, giving the Wildcats a chance to come back with a run in the bottom of the second and three in the fifth.
Each team had three hits, all singles. The Wildcats did take advantage of six walks.
Last night’s winner will host the Region 4-4A tournament this weekend.
Hawks force “if necessary” game before falling to Beech in 12-4A final
HENDERSONVILLE — Coming out of the District 12-4 A loser’s bracket, Green Hill forced the “if necessary” game with a 7-4 win over host Beech on Monday before the Buccaneers bounced back to take the title with a 13-2 thumping.
Both teams will play in the Region 6-4A tournament this weekend in Nashville at the District 11 champion, which had not been decided as of the end of Monday’s action.
Green Hill took the first game by scoring three times in the top of the seventh to snap a 4-4 tie.
Joey Greenstreet, the last of three Green Hill pitchers, tossed the final two innings for the win, allowing an unearned run in the sixth. Starter Matthew Swallows gave up an unearned score in the first before Liam Bowles worked the middle 3 1/3 inning, allowing two runs in the fourth on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
The Hawks had seven hits, including a double and single by Logan Barney. Nick Owens Jr. drove in two runs on two singles. Leadoff batter Habe Gray drew four of the 13 walks issued by Beech pitchers.
The second game was all Beech as the Bucs scored twice in the first inning and blew it open with five in the fourth and six in the sixth to activate the 10-run rule.
Beech only outhit Green Hill 8-6. But the Bucs drew10 walks off of four Hawks hurlers.
Beasley doubled for Green Hill while Greenstreet singled twice.
Wildcats claim district finals berth, region
COOKEVILLE — Wilson Central reached the District 7-4A championship round by ousting Cookeville in the loser’s bracket final at Tennessee Tech’s Bush Stadium.
The Wildcats overcame a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the top of the fourth inning and added single scores in the fifth and sixth, finishing with 10 hits,
Brady Schafer allowed two earned runs on five hits, a walk and two hit batters with four strikeouts in six innings for the win. Colton Vivrette gave up a run on a hit and two walks with two punchouts in the seventh for the save.
Central faced Stewarts Creek in a rematch of last year’s final later Monday. If the Wildcats won, they returned last night for the “if necessary” game. Regardless, both the Wildcats and Red Hawks will compete in the Region 4-4A tournament this weekend.
Leadoff batter Reid Spencer drove in two Central scores as he, Vivrette, Schafer, Caden Webber and Mason Tinnell turned in two hits apiece.
Friendship ousted by Webb one win short of State XII
CLARKSVILLE — Friendship Christian fell one game short of the State XII after the Commanders were ousted from the Middle Region tournament Monday with a 7-2 loss to Bell Buckle Webb at Clarksville Academy.
Webb scored twice in the third inning and three times in the fourth against Hayden Holleman. The Feet stretched the lead to 6-0 before the Commanders scored both their runs in the top of the seventh as Mason Hallum drove in both scores.
Friendship finished with just three hits, two by leadoff batter Cayden Law, as the Commanders concluded a 17-17-1 season.
Webb advanced to the bracket final against host Clarksville Academy as both will advance to the final four of the region, advancing to the state round of 12.
Lebanon shuts out Smyrna, ousted by Cookeville
COOKEVILLE — Lebanon was eliminated from the District 7-4A baseball tournament Sunday with a 6-4 loss to top-seed Cookeville at Tennessee Tech’s Bush Stadium at Averitt Express Baseball Complex.
The Cavaliers jumped to a 5-0 lead in the third inning on a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly off starter Samuel Peach.
The Blue Devils, who outhit Cookeville 8-3, drew to within 5-4 in the top of the fourth inning on a Cade Thorne sacrifice fly, a Jordan Jewell two-run homer to right field and a Brody Royalty RBI single.
Earlier in the day, Lebanon advanced by shutting out Smyrna 10-0 behind four RBIs by Evyn Underwood, who whacked a three-run triple in the second inning and a two-run double in the fifth.
The Blue Devils scored seven times in the second. Thorne was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded preceding Underwood’s triple. Jewell also drew a bases-filled free pass and an error let in two more runs.
In addition to his hitting, Underwood earned the win on the mound with one hit allowed in five innings with a walk and nine strikeouts.
He and Evan Driver each had two hits.
The Smyrna game was originally scheduled for Friday and the next round Saturday, both at Cookeville High School, before rain backed up the schedule and prompted the change in venue to Tech, which has a turf field.
Central falls into loser’s bracket with eight-inning loss to Stewarts Creek
COOKEVILLE — Wilson Central was knocked into the District 7-4A loser’s bracket Sunday with a 5-1 eight-inning loss to Stewarts Creek in the winner’s bracket final at Tennessee Tech’s Bush Stadium.
The game was supposed to be played Saturday at Cookeville High School. But rain and a two-day backup prompted games to be played Sunday and at Tech’s Averitt Express Baseball Complex.
Central scored an unearned run in the first inning when Konnor Adelsberger crossed the plate without an RBI awarded.
Adelsberger pitched seven-plus innings and took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits, two of which were homers. He walked two and struck out seven before Mason Lee gave up a run in 2/3 of an inning. Anthony Dunlay got the final out as the trio surrendered seven hits.
Brady Schafer singled twice for two of the Wildcats’ three hits.
Central returned to Tech Monday to face top-seed Cookeville in the loser’s bracket final with the winner to take on undefeated Stewarts Creek immediately following. The Red Hawks and the Wildcat-Cavalier winner will advance to the Region 4-4A tournament.
Friendship follows upset of Webb with loss to Clarksville Acad.
CLARKSVILLE — Friendship Christian fell into the Middle Region loser’s bracket Sunday with a 4-0 loss at Clarksville Academy.
The Commanders faced Bell Buckle Webb for the second time in the tournament Monday afternoon with the winner advancing to State XII and catching CA at 6:30, needing two wins over the Cougars to reach the region championship game.
Clarksville Academy scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, two in the fifth and one in the sixth as the Cougars collected five hits off Sam Duckwiler, who walked one, hit one and struck out four. The Commanders outhit the Cougars 7-5 but committed two errors, making one of the runs unearned.
Caleb Kring and Mason Hallum had two singles each for the Commanders.
Friendship opened the regional with a 4-0 win of District 3 champion Webb in Bell Buckle last Saturday behind the two-hit pitching of Bradyn Stringer, who threw 97 pitches in the seven-inning complete game with a walk, hit batter and four strikeouts.
The Commanders scored three times in the fourth inning and once in the seventh, collecting seven hits. Hallum, Hayden Holleman and Miles Fitzpatrick each finished with two singles.
Green Hill reaches region tournament, district final
HENDERSONVILLE — Green Hill reached the District 12-4A final and Region 6 tournament with a 12-3 hammering of Hendersonville on Sunday at Beech.
The teams swapped three first-inning runs before the Hawks put up three-spots in the second and fourth frames, sandwiched around two in the third and preceding one in the fifth as the totaled 12 hits.
Nick Owens Jr. and Logan Barney doubled as they, Gage Beasley and Joey Greenstreet had two hits apiece for Green Hill. Logan Barney also doubled while Grant Kruger and Xander Jackson had two RBIs apiece.
Braden Serbin pitched the first five innings for the win, allowing three runs on seven hits and a hit batter while striking out four. Aiden Montle gave up a hit while fanning three over the final two frames.
The Hawks fell into the loser’s bracket last Friday with a 12-7 loss to host Beech.
The Buccaneers jumped to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. After Green Hill closed to within 4-3 in the fifth, Beech got two back in the bottom half and blew the game open with six in the sixth.
Beech had just six hits but drew12 walks off five pitchers. Starter Jackson Hines took the loss.
Buccaneer pitchers were no more successful finding the strike zone as they issued 13 free passes while allowing the Hawks four hits.
Greenstreet homered and as he and Jackson drove in three runs each while Beasley banged out two singles.
Green Hill faced Beech on Monday night in the championship round needing two wins to win the title. But the Hawks are still region-bound.
