Stewarts Creek edges Central for 7-4A flagGLADEVILLE — A year after beating Stewarts Creek on the Red Hawks’ field to win the District 7-4A championship, Wilson Central saw the tables turn Tuesday night as the Wildcats lost at home to SCHS 4-3 to take the title.
The tournament, which had been held at top-seeded Cookeville before weather prompted a change in venue to Tennessee Tech’s turf field, was moved to WCHS for the final since Cookeville was ousted from the tournament. Stewarts Creek, seeded fourth, threw a monkey wrench in Cookeville’s plans by upsetting the Cavaliers in CHS’ first game.
The Red Hawks, with former Central assistant coach Brian Howard now their head coach, scored in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a tie after the Wildcats had tallied twice in the top of the inning to even the score.
The teams traded first-inning runs before Stewarts Creek went up 3-1 in the third.
Landon Ivy pitched the final 3 1/3 innings and took the loss after starter Mason Lee worked the first 2 2/3. The pair allowed nine hits and four walks while hitting two.
Central finished with five hits, including a pair of singles by Konnor Adelsberger.
With the district championship, Stewarts Creek is hosting the Region 4-4A tournament this weekend. Wilson Central battled Blackman yesterday before the Red Hawks took on Siegel. The winners will play for the championship at noon today, followed by the losers at 3 p.m. The remaining one-loss teams will meet at 6 p.m. to determine second place which will travel to next week’s sectional while the champion plays at home.
