If walls could talk, the stories that 109 E. Main St., also known as the Hire and Jent Building, would tell would be sweet memories for many of Hartsville’s lifelong residents. From dry goods to clothing, you name it and it has probably been sold inside this building.
Tera Hix, owner of the building, says she practically grew up at the location. Her grandfather and businessman, Frank R. Hire Sr., acquired the building and operated a department store. Hire owned several businesses throughout Tennessee and Kentucky. The building even survived a fire in the downtown area due to a rubber roof and a firewall that Mr. Hire installed to protect the structure.
Tera’s father, Gordon Hire, graduated from college and was sent to manage the Hartsville store for 60 days. Those days turned into years and from 1970-1992, the store sold everything from dishtowels to tuxedos and prom dresses.
“My mother was a seamstress and did alterations for the store,†said Hix. “I had a little room where I would play while my parents worked.â€
Throughout the years, many local women were employed in the Hire and Jent building.
“I remember shopping here when I was younger,†said Kristy West, co-owner of Blue Roan + Co. “It was a booming business and the local place to shop in Hartsville.â€
The building has housed a variety of businesses including a hardware and pool supply store. New life continues to be breathed into historic downtown Hartsville and the building itself as the joint venture of two boutiques, Bows & Spurs Boutique and Blue Roan + Co. comes to life.
Bows & Spurs Boutique owner Sabrina Storey always dreamed of owning her own business and opened her store on Vance Lane in 2023. She began selling clothing for infants and children through size 14. She expanded her line to include up to size 16 and added Mama & Me and men’s fashion to her store. She also created a traveling boutique and sold clothing at surrounding area events and venues. Her merchandise can also be purchased online at her website at .
As her business grew, Storey knew a larger space would be needed to continue to expand. When she learned that the Hire and Jent building would be available, she knew it would be a perfect place to move her growing business to.
“There is so much revitalization taking place in downtown Hartsville right now,†said Storey. “We wanted to be a part of that story too — everyone working together to revive the area and provide the community and visitors with great shopping experiences.â€
In the renovations to the building, it was important to Storey to maintain historical components of the building. Sections of the original brick wall have been incorporated into the decor of the shop and historical pictures of the building will hang inside the boutique.
Kayla Hauskins owned and operated Southern Gypsies Boutique in Gallatin. As she began a full-time career in dental hygiene, she made the decision to sell the boutique in 2017.
“My mom and I missed picking out clothing lines and the market,†said Hauskins. “We bought a travel trailer and turned it into a mobile boutique and hat bar and rebranded with a new name in 2022.â€
The mom and daughter team chose the name Blue Roan + Co. for their love of the blue roan horses.
“We don’t have horses today,†said West. “The blue roans are beautiful and our favorite horses.â€
The boutique owners don’t consider themselves just business partners, they are friends that are more like family.
“Sabrina’s mom worked for me,†said West, owner of Early Learning Preschool. “Sabrina’s older sister and my daughter, Kayla, were friends and cheered together. We’ve worked together on fundraising events and taken trips together.â€
“When we learned that Sabrina would be moving to a new space, we talked to her to see if she would be opposed to us joining her,†said Hauskins. “Though we are two separate businesses that will share the same space, our businesses complement each other very well.â€
“Sharing business space for our two businesses seemed a natural thing to do,†said West. “We know each other, we work together well, and we support one another, communicate well and just have fun.â€
Once open for business, each boutique will display their wares and maintain separate registers for their sales, just as vendors do when they come together at an event and customers pay at each both or trailer. The Hat Bar will be incorporated into the building as a permanent fixture. Hat parties can be scheduled for special events and after hours.
Hauskins and West will continue to travel with their mobile boutique to several of their favorite events. Storey will focus on her business in Hartsville and may consider traveling again in the future. The store will be open Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
The public is invited to the Grand Opening Ceremony and Ribbon Cutting of Bows & Spurs Boutique and Blue Roan + Co. on Saturday, June 14 from 5-9 p.m. The Ribbon Cutting, sponsored by the Hartsville-Trousdale Chamber of Commerce will take place at 4 p.m. The event will include live music, food truck vendors, shopping and possibly even an ice cream truck, free glow sticks for the kids and a combined store giveaway (purchase in store required to be entered into the giveaway). The owners are excited to celebrate their grand opening with the community.
