The Trousdale County Senior Center offers a variety of programs monthly to enhance the lives of the senior population in the county. From creative outlets to physical exercise, to health education, field trips and more, the center provides something for all interests.
Recently at the center, the Trousdale County Sheriff’s Department presented a gun safety class and took members to the gun range for shooting practice. Deputy DJ Harris, a seven-year veteran with the sheriff’s department and member of the Special Response Team, presented a power point presentation to the class.
Harris stressed the importance of always handling a gun as if it was loaded. He reminded the class to keep their fingers off the trigger, not to point the gun at something if they weren’t prepared to destroy it, and to always be aware of their target but also to note what’s behind and surrounding it.
Lieutenant Brad Basford and EMS Director Matt Batey also answered questions and provided additional information. After the presentation, officers worked with each person individually to instruct them how to properly load and unload their firearms and how to clean them.
The men also instructed participants on having a solid stance, a firm grip, a smooth and consistent trigger pull, accurate sight alignment, follow through and breathing. The officers also discussed permit-less carry laws and restrictions, some possible malfunctions such as failure to fire, proper storage of firearms, and concerns with concealed versus open carry. They also instructed seniors to record all the serial numbers of the firearms they own for insurance and potential theft purposes.
An upcoming event that community seniors should take note of is the 2025 Health Fair at the Trousdale County Senior Center, 270 Marlene St., on Monday, May 12 from 8-11 a.m. Seniors in the community are invited to receive free information, screenings, giveaways and door prizes. Call 615-374-1102 or come by the center to schedule an appointment.
The Trousdale Medical Center will provide cholesterol and glucose coupons, checks on blood pressure, pulse and respirations, as well as hands on CPR instruction and senior life solutions screenings, fall risk assessments, and low dose CT/lung cancer screenings.
The Ascension Medical Group Mobile Mammography vehicle will be on site. Women aged 40 and up should bring their insurance card if interested in mammogram services. Also attending the health fair is the Blood Assurance Bloodmobile. Others onsite include local pharmacies, banks, library, home health agencies, and associates from the SHIP Program, TN Blind, Meals on Wheels and more.
