With school only a few short weeks away from starting back, Macon County school bus drivers recently attended a meeting which gave them an updated refresher course in school bus safety.
Macon County School Bus Garage supervisor Ricky Taylor says that he is always encouraged by these meetings to help him and his drivers stay up to date on safety for the children in Macon County as well as the drivers.
“These courses help us all to stay trained in dealing with many different things that can happen on any given day,” said Taylor. “We want the parents to know that we take the safety of their children very seriously and are committed to keeping them safe the entire time they are on the buses.”
Driving a school bus takes concentration and the ability to deal with many different distractions while staying focused on the task at hand, he said.
“When driving a bus, you will often have multiple kids talking, sometimes getting loud and that can be very distracting to the driver,” said Taylor. “We realize that it’s just kids being kids, and we want to stress that all drivers are trained to deal with that in a calm and professional manner. We have these training courses each year, and today all drivers were also given drug screenings to help ensure that our drivers are good, responsible people and able to handle anything they encounter while driving.”
The first full day of school will be Aug. 5, 2025.
“We are ready to go,” said Taylor. “All drivers have been tested and updated on safety measures dealing with everything from collisions to fires. I am confident that all our drivers are ready and able to handle anything that comes their way in the upcoming school year.”
The Macon County School Bus Garage is located at 501 College Street in Lafayette. Their phone number is 615-666-3592 for anyone with inquiries about bus routes and schedules.
